Tank Inspection

To extend the life of your tank and prevent service failures, regular professional tank inspections are essential to determine the tank's exact maintenance requirements. Inspections can detect inadequate conditions, non-compliance with current codes and possible latent defects.
To suit your operational needs, inspections may be performed while the tanks are either in-service or out-of-service. After the inspections are completed, a written inspection report is furnished which includes a detailed component evaluation, photographs, recommendations for compliance and cost estimates.
The extent of maintenance resulting from the inspections could include:
-
Shell, roof and bottom repairs or replacements
-
Roof structural repairs or replacements
-
Manway repairs, relocations or replacements
-
Repair of defective welds
-
Cathodic protection
-
Foundation repairs and modifications
-
Special equipment
-
Cleaning and painting
-
Testing
A small investment in an inspection helps you make informed maintenance decisions and saves costs in the long run. KBHS, Inc. has the experienced staff to handle any maintenance requirements that will bring your tanks in to acceptable compliance.
At a minimum, a good inspection of a water storage tank includes categories that address sanitary conditions, structural and footing conditions, safety and security conditions, coating system conditions and a statement of general details. Examples of items included in these categories would include:
- Roof access hatches should have watertight covers that overlap the framed opening. Covers should be hinged on one side and have a locking device.
- Vents should be constructed to prevent entrance of outside water and exclude birds, animals and insects. Vents should be screened. Overflows should not be used as vents.
- Overflows must be sized to carry more than the highest filing rate of the tank.
- Hydrants, cleanouts or similar flushing devices must be provided on the piping of all storage facilities. These devices should be located so that they can drain the storage while the facility is isolated form the system.
- Structural conditions such as condition of anchor bolts, tightness of rods, concrete foundations.
- Determine the type and general condition of the interior and exterior paint systems.
- Determine extent, nature and depth of any pitting.
- Check paint for chalking and blistering.
- Check all bolts and rivets for corrosion and leaks.
- All cables and wires to devices should be installed inside conduits and secured to the storage structure.
